Clarification

It has caught my attention that the genre known as Depressive/Suicidal Black Metal receives a considerable amount of flak due to it's violent nature. Of course, organized depression and the genre title itself can become quite a nuisance too people who have actually suffered through it, but you have to understand, not all the bands within the genre have even given themselves that title nor have they given themselves the title of Black Metal.

Misanthropy, to my knowledge, is the complete hatred for human kind, but it seems like more than half the bands that preach it don't even exercise that belief. As stated in Satre's Nausea, Misanthropy can only be called so if the person hates him/herself. Which brings me to the next topic, Self Mutilation. I cannot stress this topic enough, it is often clouded by the attention gathering, "Emo". Self Mutilation has existed for a considerable amount of time, believe it or not, during the days of Christ, or perhaps older. Flagellants took part in rituals in which left them bleeding for the purpose of God/Christ/etc, certain tribes spill their blood in order to show their devotion to an alliance, and so on and so forth. Emo on the other hand are just simple scars on their wrists proclaiming their absolute disgust for how society has perceived the image they wished to evoke yet they managed to go on with their lives as happy as an infant with absolutely no care in the world. Correct me if I am wrong, but have you ever met an "Emo" who has actually considered themselves depressed, mentally ill, or even troubled?

DSBM is the premise of Black Metal in it's near perfect form. Of course, Black Metal or Metal in general was comprised of the disgust towards what society has propagated, thus creating the equilibrium of hatred for man when life was celebrated greatly during the times of the Baby Boom. Misanthropy was huge when the genre began and still remains to be of great importance in the Black Metal scene to this day. So why should DSBM receive so much shit from those who have misinterepreted the meaning of Black Metal? I won't completely deny my hatred towards the genre during my earlier years but after embracing such art and considering the impact Black Metal has had on my life, I have come to the conclusion that DSBM is indeed a valid portion of the scene. At times, like any other genre, these bands create lyrics so emotional that it becomes a comedic act that you would soon find surfacing on youtube as one of the worst bands on earth.

So before you begin criticizing some of the stalwarts of DSBM, analyze every aspect of it before you jump to your conclusion. Believe me, some bands that I listened to are not listened to anymore due to the fact that they are in fact one of "Them" while others have actually attracted me deeper into such art. Like this really matters anyways, individuality in Black Metal has reached an all time high in which it has blinded half the people from the various works of art that made a genre so. Classical, Blues, Ambient, Folk etc, have been ignored when in fact it plays a huge part in it. So I would think that because I am saying this, you have to be above the bar and disagree because you want to be yourself. Thats for another entry. . .
